Public speaking

Putting ideas in heads

Of the hundreds (or thousands) of presentations you've seen, how many were good? 10% is a fairly typical answer. And that's a shame. Presentations are expensive. So why don't we just give up and email each other slide decks? We'd be saving ourselves a lot of boredom, confusion, and money.

The answer, of course, is that human presenters add something unique and irreplaceable. They can put an idea in an audience's head and make it stay there. But only if they're good.

What's good? Good means persuasive. If you're presenting to make an audience think or do something differently, it's obvious that you need to be persuasive. But even if you're only informing - moving information from your brain to your audience's brain - you still need to be persuasive. Why? Because human beings do not listen and remember just because they're sitting in the room. My attention span is not 60 minutes or 30 minutes. It's about 10 seconds. Sitting in an audience, I'm constantly distracted by my need for caffeine, my dinner plans, and the surreal output of my imagination. So even if you just want your audience to listen and remember, you'll need to actively persuade them to do so.

We offer a robust method for being persuasive in public speaking - for commanding attention, maintaining it, helping memories to form, and, if necessary, persuading people to think or do something differently.

How are we different? So many public speaking courses focus primarily on body language; as if there was a magic way of waving your arms around to get your ideas to stick. There isn't. And this focus is detrimental - when you start by training body language, people tend to become self-conscious and paralysed. We start with your ideas. If you know that your message is good - that your speech is actually bringing value to the audience - confident body language follows naturally.
